The painting entitled Newcastle in Reign of Queen Elizabeth is by John Storey. This painting shows an imaginative reconstruction of 16th century Newcastle and is one of John Storey's most important paintings. The medieval buildings along the quayside still existed at the time the picture was painted, but most were destroyed in the great fire of 1854. The picture is painted in transparent watercolour washes over careful pencil drawing. Like many of Storey's pictures, this scene was reproduced as a large coloured lithograph.
