The painting entitled Wreck of a Frigate, Spain by Charles N Hemy. The painting showing the dramatic view of a ship broken on rocks was based on Charles Napier Hemy's experiences as a sailor. The dark, stormy sky contrasts with the bright green of the grass on the mountain, and the light blue of the turbulent water below. The bright colouring and sharp detail reflect the Pre-Raphaelite teaching that Hemy received from William Bell Scott at the Government School of Design in Newcastle. The picture was painted whilst Hemy was still living in Gateshead. He left the North East shortly afterwards. Buy this as a framed art print, canvas art print or art poster.
