The painting of Heaton Dene entitled Evening View on Heaton Dene from an Eminence near Mables Mill, which at the time this picture was painted by Thomas Miles Richardson (Snr.), was part of the grounds of Heaton Hall, owned by Lord Ridley. The dene was used as a pleasant country walking area by people from the town. Most of Heaton Dene was built over later in the 19th century, but part still remains as a park.
