The painting of The Bard by John Martin, illustrates Thomas Grays poem of the same title. This describes the story of the destruction of the Welsh bards by Edward I in the 13th century. The last surviving Welsh bard is shown cursing the English troops below, before plunging to his death. The enormous army is dwarfed by the awe-inspiring scale of the mountains. This was a feature of the Sublime landscape style of this period. The castle was based on illustrations of Harlech in Wales, but the landscape was probably based on images of the Alps.
