Watercolour painting entitled 'Burial of Victims of Hartley Disaster' was painted by the Yorkshire artist John Leonard. The painting shows the burial of the 204 coal miners killed in the Hartley Pit disaster of January 1862. The bodies were buried in Earsdon churchyard, North Tyneside, and in an adjoining field donated by the Duke of Northumberland. The miners had been trapped in a shaft that had been blocked by the fall of a 42-tonne beam supporting the pumping engine. Following the Hartley Pit Disaster, the law was changed in 1872 so that all mines had to have two ways out. Choose to buy this painting as an unframed print, mounted box canvas print or framed print.
