Painting, oil on canvas, entitled Lago di Garda, by the artist Clarkson Stanfield (RA). Clarkson Stanfield made a long visit to Italy in 1838-39. He later used his sketches for paintings such as this, which was painted twenty years after his visit. Views of the Italian lakes near the Alps were very popular subjects for paintings at this time. Clarkson Stanfield specialised in coast and lake scenes, and travelled widely to paint new subjects.
