Tall woodland trees have been arranged to frame a view of the country house of William Cuthbert near Hexham, Northumberland in this view. The house was designed by the Newcastle architect John Dobson in his 'domestic castellated' style, and was built 1836-41. In the foreground is a group of cattle, used to maintain the cropped grass of the parkland. The extensive walled garden is visible in front of the house. John Wilson Carmichael painted several views of buildings designed by his friend John Dobson.
