John Falconar Slater painted many coastal scenes near his home at Whitley Bay, on the North-East coast. In this image of fishing boats by the quayside at North Shields, he has used vigorous brushmarks to describe the ripples of water on the river. His admiration for the work of the French Impressionists is reflected in the way he has painted morning light filtering through the clouds in the sky.
