Painting entitled Prize Fight by William Martin records a famous, though illegal prize-fight that took place at Middleton in Northumberland on October 31 1837 between Molyneaux, on the left, and Will Renwick. An unpleasant fight of 87 rounds ended with Molyneaux head-butting his opponent into a submission. William Martin was the brother of the more famous John Martin, the British Romantic artist, born at Haydon Bridge in the late Eighteenth Century.
