Painted by Thomas Good this painting illustrates an elderly man who has forgotten the dignified behaviour appropriate to his age and respectable standing (shown by his sober, black clothing) and is dancing with ridiculous abandon to the music. A label on the back of this picture refers to the impossibility of ridding the world of foolishness. Although painted in the early 19th century, the picture is set around seventy years earlier. The subject and style of the picture were influenced by Dutch 17th century paintings of ordinary life. Thomas Good (1789-1872) was a Berwick-upon-Tweed artist; original size 33.1cm x 40.5cm.
