Two French sailors from the ship are shown on the left of this scene. On the right is a Sunderland Chief Petty Officer. He is wearing a campaign medal of the Crimean War (1854-1856), when France and Britain had been on opposing sides. The sailors are on board 'HMS Active', built in 1845.
