This portrait was a 'one hour study' painted at Sunderland on the afternoon of 6th November 1879, on the same day that the Sunderland Museum and Art Gallery was opened. Thomas Dixon, the Sunderland cork-cutter, was a self-educated working man. He was active in several organisations which aimed to improve cultural opportunities in Sunderland, and a strong supporter of the establishment of an Art Gallery in the town.
