This portrait painting of an attractive young woman has been given extra status by being associated with the Bible story of Ruth, a poor young widow. She is shown in this scene holding a few ears of corn that she has gleaned from the field after the harvesters have left. The sun is beginning to set, casting a pink glow in the sky. In the Old Testament story, Ruth married Boaz, who owned the field. Their descendents included Jesus. The artist Charles Landelle was a French painter of historical subjects.
