A high tide (spate) from a storm has thrown up fish and pieces of wood onto the beach, which are being collected by local people in this portrait. The picturesque village of Cullercoats near Tynemouth attracted many artists. Henry Perlee Parker painted many fishing subjects in addition to smuggling pictures and portraits. He had a successful career in Newcastle from 1815 to 1841, after which he moved to Sheffield and then to London.
