This portrait painting shows the Roman seige of Carthage in 146 BC. The soldiers of the beseiging army are using a catapult to fire a red-hot bolt from beneath a protective wooden canopy. Painted by Edward Poynter who specialised in scenes from ancient history, combining convincing details with dramatic action. Poynter was also admired for his skill at painting the human body, which was an important part of the prestigious History painting style of the time. He was a very successful London artist.
