Isa (Isabella) Thompson was one of many late-19th century artists who were interested in showing working people in a straightforward, unsentimental way. The two fishwives in this portrait are collecting seaweed and driftwood to burn on their cottage fires. Their bonnets are the type worn at Staithes, Yorkshire. Isa Thompson had lived there for a period, and continued to visit after moving back to her home area of the North East. She married the artist Robert Jobling in 1893.
