Arthur Hughes' portrait shows the young family of the Newcastle industrialist and art collector James Leathart. Hughes took portrait studies at the family home in Gateshead. Hughes was one of the younger generation of Pre-Raphaelite artists. For this picture, he used a Pre-Raphaelite technique of painting bright, pure colours over a white under-layer to increase the intensity of the colours. The balcony format was influenced by 16th century Italian Renaissance pictures. Mrs Leathart has also been portrayed in a Renaissance-style dress.
