Perseus is shown holding up the head of Medusa, one of the snake-haired Gorgons in Greek mythology. He is turning away his face, as a look from Medusa could turn him to stone. Frederick Pomeroy has placed the figure in a tense, rotating pose that combines movement with graceful curving lines. The muscles and bones are naturalistically modelled, producing a surface that reflects light from different planes. This Edwardian style was known as The New Sculpture, and was a reaction to the more generalised modelling of earlier Victorian sculpture.
