The Laing Art Gallery was built 1901 to 1904 with funds provided by Alexander Laing, a Scottish businessman living in Newcastle. This sculpture was commissioned to mark his generosity. The document Alexander Laing holds is probably intended to represent the plans of the Art Gallery. Christian Neuper was a German-born sculptor. He had a workshop in Newcastle for about ten years from 1905, before returning to Germany.
