The painting entitled Newcastle upon Tyne from Gateshead; oil on canvas, by T. Liddell; drawn in 1850-80. Thomas Liddell’s painting is a rare view of the Gateshead quayside. He shows the tall warehouses that were built along both sides of the River Tyne, making the most of the small amount of flat land available. St Mary’s Church, Gateshead is on the far left of the view. The arches of the old Tyne Bridge can just be made out on the river far below the High Level Bridge. The castle is on the Newcastle skyline on the right, with Moot Hall in front of it. St Nicholas Church (later Cathedral) is on the right, and All Saints Church is on the far right. Thomas Liddell was the second son of Lord Ravensworth of Ravensworth Castle. He exhibited his paintings in Newcastle from 1826 until the early 1840s. After he married in 1843 he seems to have given up painting. Buy this as a framed art print, canvas art print or art poster.
