In this portrait, Scottish soldiers have captured herds of sheep and cattle on a raid into the North East of England, and are driving them away. The North East border castle they have raided is burning behind them. Scottish subjects such as this were very popular in the 19th century, particularly after Queen Victoria bought her estate at Balmoral and made regular visits to Scotland. Richard Beavis painted many pictures of landscape and coastal scenes. He often gave them a romantic theme from history, as in this picture. He exhibited his work in London and abroad.
