Painting entitled Newcastle upon Tyne in the Reign of Queen Victoria was painted by John Storey. This very large watercolour was sketched from Windmill Hills, Gateshead. St Marys Church is in the centre foreground. Industrial development on the Gateshead bank of the river is visible on the right. The medieval-based old Tyne Bridge was still in place). The High Level Bridge (opened 1849) is on the left. John Storey was a Newcastle artist who specialised in views of buildings and streets.
