The painting entitled The Mayor's Barge on the Tyne is by John Wilson Carmichael. The painting shows preparations or a practice for the Ascension Day parade in May. For this event, the Mayors barge led a large group of ships along the Tyne in a ceremony to mark Newcastles boundaries. The Mayor's barge is shown in the centre on the far side of the river in this scene and the old Tyne Bridge is on the left.
