The painting entitled Through Sea and Air was painted by Charles Napier Hemy. Born in the North East, Hemy painted this picture in 1910, in Falmouth, Cornwall, where he had settled in 1881. This large painting was one of Hemy's most popular pictures. Hemy's work was admired for the verve with which he could paint details such as the rushing water and the brisk wind filling the sails of the small yacht. The picture was painted from studies made on board a boat that Hemy had converted into a painting studio. He had spent some years as a sailor in his youth, and never lost his love of the sea.
