The painting of the 'A' pit at Backworth, near Shiremoor, North Tyneside which opened in 1818. It was the first of 8 pits at Backworth. The winding gear to move miners and bring coal up from the pit can be seen in the centre of the picture. Beside it is the winding-gear engine house with its tall, smoking chimney. The coal wagons at the front of the picture are being hauled on a rope using a stationary engine. The picture is thought to have been painted for a stable keeper at the colliery.
